Michelle Benward on Lost Boys
Salt Lake City Weekly, an alternative newspaper, wrote a story last week about efforts to help FLDS teens who have left the twin towns of Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Ariz.

Michelle Benward, director of New Frontiers for Families, made the most accurate statement I have heard yet from an activist involved in that effort:

''A lot of them are out because they are simply going through normal teenage rebellion and the culture isn't as accepting of it as the rest of society. Some leave on their own when they realize they can't live the strict way their parents demand of them. There are different reasons for how they end up here.''

Benward said about 114 youth had visited a drop-in home dubbed ''The House Just Off Bluff'' in the past year. About a dozen teens live in the home, she has said.Â

So just how are the lost

So just how are the lost boy's any different from the thousand of runaway's that can be found on the streets of our cities that you never hear about. Yes it's sad but teens do rebel and defy the authority of their parent, they have sense the time of Cain.

re: lost boys

I disagree that these boys are 'lost'. In fact most of these boys HATE the name.

There are FAR more out in the 'real' world than occur with the 'lost' boys. I think it is a name generated by an anti-polygamist.

Should these boys be helped? Absolutely. Should all lost children be helped? Absolutely.

Should one receive more help simply because he/she left a polygamist community? Not necessarily. Each should be treated individually and with due process.

Now, if the Government could even COMPREHEND my last sentence, that would be a miracle.
