The Genealogy Of Jesus

Can any one of you explain this?
In your bible,Matthew.1:1-17 says there was, 14 generations in all from ABRAHAM to DAVID,and
14 from DAVID to the EXILE TO BABYLON,and
14 from exile to the CHRIST.But
When you add up the names one by one in each generation there is no 14th generations!

Mat 1:1 A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham:

Mat 1:2 Abraham was the father of Isaac,

Isaac the father of Jacob,

Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,

Mat 1:3 Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar,

Perez the father of Hezron,

Hezron the father of Ram,

Mat 1:4 Ram the father of Amminadab,

Amminadab the father of Nahshon,

Nahshon the father of Salmon,

Mat 1:5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab,

Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth,

Obed the father of Jesse,

Mat 1:6 and Jesse the father of King David.

David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah's wife,

Mat 1:7 Solomon the father of Rehoboam,

Rehoboam the father of Abijah,

Abijah the father of Asa,

Mat 1:8 Asa the father of Jehoshaphat,

Jehoshaphat the father of Jehoram,

Jehoram the father of Uzziah,

Mat 1:9 Uzziah the father of Jotham,

Jotham the father of Ahaz,

Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,

Mat 1:10 Hezekiah the father of Manasseh,

Manasseh the father of Amon,

Amon the father of Josiah,

Mat 1:11 and Josiah the father of Jeconiah[fn1] and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.

Mat 1:12 After the exile to Babylon:

Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel,

Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,

Mat 1:13 Zerubbabel the father of Abiud,

Abiud the father of Eliakim,

Eliakim the father of Azor,

Mat 1:14 Azor the father of Zadok,

Zadok the father of Akim,

Akim the father of Eliud,

Mat 1:15 Eliud the father of Eleazar,

Eleazar the father of Matthan,

Matthan the father of Jacob,

Mat 1:16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

Mat 1:17 Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ.

translation error, mostly

i like the KJV, as far as english translations go, and to know the history of that version is very interesting as well. the fact that over 5000 pieces of literature were collated and compared is pretty astounding, now, of course, none of those 5000 separate documents are beginning-to-end collections like we are used to. they are a page here, a fragment there. a whole 'chapter' or just a paragraph. sometimes the collected letters of 2 or 3 prominent figures. from those gathered documents the translators generated a 'majority text' basically, when there were 4 different ways a verse was said, they went with the one which occured most often. logical, but not always 100 percent accurate.

the word which is translated 'husband' in Mat. 1:16 should probably have been translated 'father'

unless you believe 'Yusef' was a very rare name in those days.

that makes 14.

point being there are 2 genealogies given, and the reason for 2 genealogies, is that if we rely on the genealogy of Joseph the Carpenter, we have a little problem, if Joseph was not the progenitor, and biological father of Y'shuah. But we cannot throw Joseph's genealogy out, either. So we need a 2nd witness, which is Y'shuah's only earthly biological parent, Miriam. her genealogy had to be in a priestly line as well, that way no one could question whether or not the Man born in a Sukkah, in the sheepfolds of Beth-Lechem Ephratha, was indeed our great High-Priest, and the true Passover Lamb, slain from the foundation of the world.

I respect your differing point of view. I am glad you are here.
