Graduate Student Needs Some Help

Kristen --> http://www.4thefamily.us/user/6081

Hello everyone.

My name is Kristen, and I am a graduate student at Colorado State University. My field of study is cultural anthropology which is basically the study of human culture and society. I am interested in writing my Master's thesis on plural marriage in the U.S. I am specifically interested in women's perspectives and insights on their religious beliefs and their roles in marriage and family.

My goal is to interview individuals involved in plural marriages to gain an understanding of polygyny through the eyes of those that practice this form of marriage. The interviews could be conducted via email, instant messaging, or in person. I am currently trying to establish contact with anyone who would be interested in participating in my research. The bulk of my research would be conducted in the coming spring and summer of 2012 as I have to submit a proposal and gain approval from my institution before I can start any in depth research.

At this point you may be wondering about my personal life, so I will share a few things with you. As you may have guessed, I do not practice plural marriage, but I strongly believe in people's right to choose their own lifestyle without the fear of persecution. I am 24 years old, and I have been married to my loving husband for almost four months. We don't have any children yet, but we are planning to start a family in the next three to four years. Until then, we have two dogs which we spoil to death.

I invite anyone who is interested in participating in my research efforts to contact me through this website. If you have any questions or want more information, then please do not hesitate to contact me. I am genuinely interested in learning about plural marriage, and I am committed to conducting ethical and objective research.

Thank you,

Kristen

Concern

Hi Everyone,

I received an email from a member of the website that my use of language like "practice" or "lifestyle" may be offensive to some people when used in reference to plural marriage. I definitely did not intend to offend anyone with that choice of language. By using those words I just mean that marriage, no matter the type, is a cultural tradition or custom. I would refer to my own monogamous marriage as a cultural practice. I hope I did not offend anyone, and if I did, I am deeply sorry.

Thanks,

Kristen

hi

U can feel free to contact me.... however u want to just ask....

Hello

Thank you very much for your reply! I have been out of town for a few days, so I just saw your reply tonight.

My intention would be to learn all that I can about plural marriage through observation and interaction with people in plural marriages. Traditionally, an anthropologist would visit the culture that he or she is studying, and immerse one's self in the culture. However, people who are in plural marriages can come from all regions, backgrounds, and religions, so it makes doing traditional anthropological research tricky.

I am open to gaining an understanding of plural marriage in whatever manner people are comfortable with. Anyone involved in the research would remain anonymous unless they chose otherwise. If you have any other questions or concerns please let me know. I will definitely contact you within the next few weeks as I start developing my research plan. I really appreciate your willingness to be involved in my research efforts.

Thank you!

Kristen
