Three Circles

It has many meanings.
The intent of the symbol from our perspective here at 4thefamily.us was to signify the union of three people in marriage (though, in no way limited to three). It is representative of the relationships being equal in purpose, commitment, and charity (love).

It seemed like the best possible symbol for what this site is about.

Variations and similar representations have been used in several cultures historically, to represent different things, from divine to pagan.

In Christianity they are called Borromean Rings and are commonly used as a symbol of Trinity: Father, Son, Holy Ghost. I chose this version of the symbol, instead of the equilateral triangle surrounded by a circle (which also represents Trinity in Christian faith), because Mormons believe in this concept differently (One God, three distinct personages). So it seemed to cover both faiths fairly.

In celtic tradition, a similar symbol (knots instead of rings) has represented the cycle of life: Life, Death, and Rebirth. It has also represented the three spheres of influence in the material world: Land, Sea and Sky

Variations of the symbols are also used to symbolize the Druidic Threefold Sister Goddess: Fotla/Eiru/Banba. Ireland, or Erin, is named after Eriu. It also symbolizes the Wiccan Threefold Mother Goddess: Maiden/Mother/Crone (or variations thereof).

The Hopi indians in Arizona have apparently used it as a symbol of tribal migration, cyclical in nature, by a people consisting of a few large tribes or clans.

There is more to be found concerning this particular symbol. It can be interpreted and misinterpreted according to anyone's perceptions, ideals, direction, or history.

The use of the symbol here at 4thefamily is defined as I mentioned earlier: union of marriage in purpose, commitment, and charity (love).

I kinda like it :-)

I found the following sites which sell medallions with the symbol (inverted)

three circle rings

Cool site Neal. The rings would be awesome to use for wedding rings. People would notice and maybe it would be good opening to discuss poly and let people see poly folks are as normal as non poly people. Here is a list of all their rings.

Looking Into It

Holly and Breezy - I agree with you - love the symbol. I'll look into it a bit this week, but my understanding is that Nealaus, the website owner, designed it. The idea behind it was along the lines of "rings of three" polygyny type marriage symbolism.

Cheers!

Feedback please

Ooh, I think it would be a great polagny/polygamy symbol (or even just a symbol to promote this site and make people aware of our feelings). It could be for people interested, promoting polygamy/polygany. You could have a shop on this site selling tee-shirts, rings, pendants. Most organisations use a symbol, why not us? what does everyone think? I would buy one and promote our feelings?

I will consider the

I will consider the possibility. I have too many irons in the fire at the moment, but I can see the advantages of having our own merchandising here. Give me some time to stew it ;)
