Natural law and the rhetoric of empire: Reynolds v. United States, polygamy, and imperialism.
Submitted by ryenwine on Wed, 04/11/2012 - 11:58.http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Natural+law+and+the+rhetoric+of+empire%3a+...
Here's an academic paper that I recently came across. It looks at the 19th century Mormon situation, and how anti-Mormon sentiment linked up to Imperialist (and racist) ideas. "The onward march of the North-Western European Peoples" and all that. It'll make you shudder as you read it, but thoroughly fascinating.

SALT LAKE CITY— A federal judge has refused to dismiss a lawsuit filed by a reality TV show polygamist and his wives, challenging Utah's ban on polygamy.
In a ruling released late Friday afternoon, U.S. District Court Judge Clark Waddoups ruled that Kody Brown's lawsuit against the state can proceed. However, he did dismiss Governor Gary Herbert and Attorney General Mark Shurtleff as defendants. Utah County Attorney Jeff Buhman remains a defendant.
Joe Darger interviewed on the BBC
Submitted by ryenwine on Sat, 01/21/2012 - 13:10.The Nolan Show is a late night program, broadcast on BBC Radio 5 Live. Friday 2oth January 2011, host Stephen Nolan interviewed Joe Darger. A longish interview, and quite good. Nolan's incredulity is interesting. The interview does not appear at the beginning of the program, but about halfway in. You should be able to get it up on the BBC iPlayer: http://www.bbc.co.uk/i/b019g8x3/
Idaho School Board Superintendent Resigns over Polygamy Charge
Submitted by Sage on Mon, 01/16/2012 - 02:21.Here are a couple of news articles out of Idaho regarding the suspension and then resignation of the Horseshoe Bend School District Superintendent. Apparently he got together with a second "wife" who wrote a letter to her sister basically saying how great her life was. The sister then took the letter to their father who immediately went to the Horseshoe Bend School Board and demanded the resignation of the superintendent.
Would love to hear thoughts, comments, and feedback on this situation.

Rick Santorum compares gay marriage to polygamy. Will that help him with GOP?
Rick Santorum, who was speaking to college Republicans in New Hampshire, was loudly booed. While GOP voters have consistently opposed gay marriage, a majority of Americans now disagree.

Hello everyone.
My name is Kristen, and I am a graduate student at Colorado State University. My field of study is cultural anthropology which is basically the study of human culture and society. I am interested in writing my Master's thesis on plural marriage in the U.S. I am specifically interested in women's perspectives and insights on their religious beliefs and their roles in marriage and family.
