Utah AG ordered to pay for polygamous takeover

ALT LAKE CITY -- Utah has been ordered to pay $5.7 million for its takeover of the assets held by a polygamous sect on the Utah-Arizona border.

The Utah Supreme Court ruled Friday that the money is owed to court-appointed accountants overseeing a takeover engineered by Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, who tried to delay paying until the sale of the sect's assets brought some cash.

For the first time ever we are about to have a Mormon nominated for president by a major political party. By a strange coincidence, we also are beginning to see a flurry of posts on liberal blogs telling us what a bizarre and deplorable religion Mormonism is. Mormons don’t smoke, or drink alcoholic or caffeinated beverages, and they oppose sex before marriage and marital infidelity. What a bunch of boobs!

“It provides me the environment and opportunity to maximize my female potential"

This article is an excerpt from "Polygamy in Primetime: Media, gender, and politics in Mormon fundamentalism" available from Brandeis University Press.

This story was covered earlier in Life online but has been changed and modified so I thought I would post it again.

Truly a heart breaking, heart wrenching, story told in words and photographs.

Anyone interested in polygamy, or as we call it, plural marriage should check out this article. The history is staggering.

This posting by Life comes on a day when a federal judge in Utah has issued harsh statements directed at the State of Utah and their bullying of plural families by holding the constant threat of prosecution over their heads. These statements do not take in to account the constant persecution felt by families adhering to this lifestyle. There is reason here to hope......

SALT LAKE CITY — A federal judge appeared reluctant to toss a lawsuit filed against Utah by a reality TV polygamist and his four wives.

Kody Brown and his wives, Meri, Janelle, Robyn, and Christine, sued the state after Lehi police opened a criminal investigation, shortly after their reality TV show “Sister Wives” debuted. They are seeking to overturn Utah’s ban on polygamy.

California bill will allow children to have more than two parents

Here is a link to an article about a new law being proposed in California. I know. I know. But it has implications for polygamous marriages where the sister wives could be "another" parent legally.

Court to decide whether 'Sister Wives' suit stands - Hearing on July 25, 2012

SALT LAKE CITY -- A federal judge scheduled arguments later this month on whether the stars of "Sister Wives" can continue challenging Utah's polygamy ban even though they won't be charged under it.

Police in Lehi opened an investigation on Kody Brown and his four wives after the reality TV show debuted in 2010. The Browns later sued, saying Utah's bigamy law violated their right to privacy.

Utah County prosecutors announced last month that they were closing the case without charging the family. They also said they have adopted a policy to not charge consenting adults in polygamous relationships unless they commit some other crime.
