Plural marriage...good idea

Dear Editor:

I enjoyed the article about old-school Mormons being right about the practice of polygamy: "Your Man thinks the more the merrier" (Mar 12).

Northwest Missouri ,has a rich Mormon heritage going back to the 1830s. Places such as Independence, Adam-ondi-Ahman, Far West and Liberty--- are places were Joseph Smith Jr., his brother Hyrum Smith and fellow cohorts Brigham Young and Heber Kimball toiled and trudged (and even both Smith brothers were imprisoned for their views). Although driven from the area, they retreated to Navoou, Illinois on the banks of the Mississippi River and carefully developed the special brand of polygamy ---called POLYGYNY ---which consists of one husband with several wives.

Even the venerable King Solomon with his legendary wisdom had 700 wives and 300 concubines as recorded in the Old Testament of The Holy Bible. The old patriarchs Abraham, Jacob, Moses and many others had multiple wives and many fine children produced fom such unions.

People in our American society feel sad about our high divorce-rate. I'd much rather see a guy keep a good faithful older wife who might no longer be able to bear children. There is no need to ditch a good woman to "trade her in" like an old car for a new younger "trophy wife". It seems to me that plural marriage sanctified by clergy with the first wife's consent is the way to go. All wives should have reached the legal age of adulthood. Repeat: ALL ADULTS. Such a legal arrangement would fill a man's biological need and preserves the wives' dignity and enables one family to live in harmony under a single roof.

Someday, I hope the people in Utah vote to legalize Biblically-based plural marriage. They sure won't lose Statehood !!! I wish that the area around Independence Mo. would make that area a plural-marriage-zone. It just might draw a whole lot of fine, traditional, salt-of-the-earth people ---and boost the population in these troubled economic times.

Sincerely,

JAMES A MARPLES
